Hurricane box: insurance checks before sailing to the Caribbean

Documentary review: 26 September 2026
Before an Atlantic crossing to the Caribbean, obtain written confirmation that your insurance accepts the entire passage, stopovers, dates and planned stay. Then check the conditions for hurricanes and named storms. Cover at your destination does not, by itself, establish cover for the voyage there.
A hurricane box is a contractual reference that may define areas and periods subject to restrictions or special conditions. It is not a universal weather boundary or a promise of safety outside it.

What is a hurricane box in yacht insurance?
In Caribbean yacht insurance discussions, hurricane box usually describes a geographical area associated with cyclone exposure. The decisive information is not the label but your policy wording, schedule and endorsements.
Navigation limits, exclusions for particular events, special deductibles and prevention requirements address different issues. Ask for a separate answer on each one.
Do not copy another owner's coordinates or treat a marketing map as an amendment to your policy. Request the exact boundaries applicable to your yacht, including dates, exceptions and the treatment of transit through the area.
If you are planning a passage, you can request a review of your yacht insurance for an Atlantic crossing and Caribbean stay, supported by your sailing itinerary.
Hurricane season and insurance dates are different
According to NOAA's explanation of the Atlantic hurricane season, the season runs from 1 June to 30 November, although hurricanes can occur outside it. This is a climatological reference, not your cover definition.
Departure decisions require weather assessment, current official instructions and attention to insurance conditions. This article does not provide a departure window or replace monitoring weather warnings.
Issue | What to check |
Cruising area | Accepted coordinates, territories, waters and passages. |
Seasonal restriction | Start and end dates; whether transit, staying or both are affected. |
Hurricane or named storm | Policy definition and included or excluded damage. |
Special deductible | Amount or percentage and the basis for calculation. |
Hurricane plan | Required measures, responsible person and activation trigger. |
Being outside a restricted area does not establish that every loss is covered. Being inside it does not, without reading the wording, establish that every claim is excluded.
Atlantic crossing insurance: review the whole itinerary
Start before committing to dates and services. Describe your departure from Spain or elsewhere in Europe, any Canary Islands or Cape Verde stopovers, the ocean passage, first Caribbean port, subsequent cruising and return or storage arrangements.
As an example of individual assessment, APRIL Marine's transatlantic passage documentation includes crew, equipment, itinerary and yacht preparation information. Its requirements are not universal rules for every insurer.
Build a file with reliable information:
• Yacht details, flag, proposed value and private or commercial use.
• Realistic dates, alternatives and intended length of stay.
• Skipper and crew ocean sailing experience.
• Hull, rig, steering, engine and safety equipment condition.
• Available reports and evidence that relevant work has been completed.
• Assistance contacts, onboard communications and incident arrangements.
Acceptance should appear in contractual documentation. A sales conversation or pending quotation is not insurance in force. Check inception, expiry, payment and outstanding conditions too.
Survey, rigging and crew: questions before arranging cover
Ask whether an ocean passage survey is required, how recent the report must be and which recommendations must be completed before departure. There is no survey age or minimum crew number that applies to every policy.
Our guide to used boat surveys and valuations distinguishes condition from value. A purchase survey does not automatically establish acceptance for an Atlantic crossing.
Disclose single-handed sailing, a paid skipper or changes of crew during the trip. Ask which conditions apply and how changes should be reported. Do not assume that one crew member's experience satisfies every requirement.

A hurricane plan for keeping a yacht in the Caribbean
A useful plan goes beyond saying that you will take the yacht to a marina. It must be achievable with the available time, people and facilities. Confirm what your contract requires and whether the proposed location is acceptable to your insurer.
Decision | Information to prepare |
Afloat or ashore | Specific location, availability and service arrangements. |
Owner absent | Responsible person, keys, authorisations and backup contact. |
Activation | Warning or trigger and sufficient time to implement measures. |
Preparation | Measures agreed with professionals for that yacht and location. |
Alternative | Response if space is unavailable, a move fails or plans change. |
Photographs, communications and receipts can help document precautions, but do not guarantee payment of a claim. Storage ashore does not automatically remove cyclone exposure either.
Yacht owners' frequently asked questions
What are the hurricane box coordinates?
Those in your applicable policy or endorsement. There is no single rectangle valid for all insurers. Request clarification when coordinates, territories and dates combine in a way that is difficult to interpret.
Is Grenada safe from hurricanes?
It should not be treated as a risk-free refuge. The official NHC report on Beryl documents its impact on Carriacou, Grenada, in July 2024. An island's position relative to an insurance boundary does not remove its weather exposure.
Can I cross in November because the ARC does?
The World Cruising Club ARC crosses from the Canary Islands in November. Participation does not replace insurer acceptance or make any particular departure safe. Check your dates, possible delays and current warnings.
Does a named storm mean only a hurricane?
Not necessarily. Check the policy definition of named storm or named windstorm: it may include events that do not reach hurricane strength. Also check what triggers any special deductible or exclusion.
How much does Atlantic crossing yacht insurance cost?
There is no universal price or surcharge. Obtain comparisons using the same yacht, value, use, route, dates and crew. Compare terms as well as premiums: limits, exclusions, deductibles and obligations may differ.
Is the deductible based on the loss or the yacht's value?
That depends on the wording. Ask for the calculation basis, any minimum amount and how it interacts with other deductibles. A percentage alone does not explain your financial exposure.
Does yacht insurance include medical assistance and repatriation?
Do not assume so. Review skipper and crew personal cover separately, including territorial limits and ocean sailing eligibility. Hull or liability cover does not establish that these expenses are included.
What if a breakdown delays arrival or changes the route?
Put safety first and report the situation promptly. Where practicable, obtain written acceptance before making planned changes. Do not assume delays automatically extend cover. For a claim, use Nautilux's claims communication channels, which are not emergency services.
Before departure: written answers rather than assumptions
Ask for the itinerary, dates, geographical limits, covered events, deductibles, crew and stay plan to be confirmed together. Keep the policy and endorsements accessible offline.
You can ask Nautilux to review insurance for your Atlantic passage and Caribbean stay. Send your current policy and proposed itinerary for comparison; acceptance and terms remain subject to the insurer.
